St. Mel's Cathedral was gutted by fire on Christmas Day in 2009. Since then the work of restoration began, and continues on. It is hoped the work will be completed in time to open for Christmas 2014. To see the progress of the Restoration of the Cathedral there is an open day on Sunday 29th September from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.
